Bournemouth University Orthopaedic Research Institute draws from expert clinical knowledge and industry innovations to address orthopaedic issues associated with our ageing population.
Dorset has the largest number of older people in the country, and this has created a high demand for orthopaedic interventions. Over 1000 joint replacements are undertaken annually and this has generated opportunities for leading-edge clinical trials that offer the potential to improve lives through innovative preventative approaches and medical interventions. BUORI aims to be an innovative specialist location for UK and international organisations in the orthopaedic, health and fitness sectors.
Wessex AHSN have been instrumental in achieving engagement and support from Dorset NHS, leisure and local authority organisations, and collaboration from a range of national and international partners including industry and universities. BUORI want to be viewed as ‘the’ centre for research and clinical expertise within Orthopaedics in the UK; much like Orthoworx in Indiana, USA – creating jobs in the region, collaborating with industry and other stakeholders, generating wealth and improving the health of the population.
Clinical trials via the public and private sector have been implemented with a view to improving the lives of over 1000 patients involved. Two of the largest multinational orthopaedic companies, Biomet and Zimmer (now Zimmer Biomet), are supporting key projects.
A recent collaboration between Wessex AHSN and BUORI has enabled support for a small business (Firstkind Ltd.), in southern England to gain FDA approval to commercialise an innovative orthopaedic device in the USA. The Wessex AHSN Accelerator Fund has supported the development of a virtual reality 3D hip replacement simulator for surgical training at Bournemouth University – improving skills of orthopaedic surgeons and improving clinical outcomes throughout the UK. Wessex AHSN have also been able to support a bid to attract £5m of HEFCE Catalyst Funds to further accelerate the development of BUORI.
