Wessex AHSN are supporting the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (HIOW STP) to develop their analytic capability and capacity through the use of simulation modelling.
The STP Mental Health Alliance is undertaking a review of inpatient and community provision with the aim of improving outcomes for adults and older people using acute mental health services and eliminating the inappropriate use of out of area acute and psychiatric intensive care unit beds.
Working alongside academic experts from Centre for Implementation Science (CIS) and the University of Southampton Business School, local data analysts from within the STP will be trained in problem structuring and simulation modelling.
The existing system will be modelled using patient activity data from throughout the acute care pathway. Modelling the system in this way will then allow the analysts to test a range of new scenarios in a safe modelling environment. The model building process will bring together service users, commissioners, and providers to understand the evidence, explore the data, and to identify national comparators.
Working collaboratively will provide the lived experience expertise from both service users and staff, which will assist the analysts when defining the existing system and also provide insight into what alternative care pathways might look like.
