What was delivered in 2022-23? 

  • 78 interactions with innovators amounting to 2,353 hours of support
  • Support for 14 grant applications
  • 10 new monthly Insight surgeries offering regular opportunities for innovators to consult experts in our Insight team.
  • We continued a joint programme of work with NIHR ARC Wessex to deliver the NHS Insights Prioritisation Programme (NIPP), which aims to understand the impact of innovations for the digital remote monitoring of deterioration, particularly in those living with frailty.
  • Our support for NIPP included hosting listening events with the public to understand their views on digital remote monitoring. These were attended by more than 40 members of the public from diverse community groups.
  • We provided bespoke advice and practical support to 21 different innovators of health and care products or services.
  • We reported key findings and made recommendations for commissioners and providers on three primary care digital demonstrators: long COVID services, virtual wards, and Cultural intelligence and inclusivity training.
  • We piloted our survey (created in 2021-22) to understand staff attitudes towards innovation and what influences these. We developed a new survey, the Wessex AHSN Attitudes Towards Innovation Survey (ATIS) to understand patient readiness to innovation.
  • As evaluation partner to Dorset Innovation Hub, we provided workshops for staff on evaluation and implementation to support the Hub’s work, and collected data to understand its implementation and impact, and included our baseline survey of attitudes to innovation for reporting in 2023-24.
  • We partnered with specialist developer Assura plc, Hampshire and Isle of Wight (HIOW) Integrated Care Board (ICB) and St Clements, a GP practice in Hampshire, to co-design an evaluation of a future exemplar of new ways of working and digital innovation within a new premises.
  • We provided easily accessible and meaningful data to support decision making for our medicines optimisation programme.
  • We collaborated with Dorset Integrated Care System (ICS) to specify an evaluation programme for their ‘Digital Access to Services at Home’ programme.
  • We co-designed with HIOW ICB an evaluation of a platform that digitises the deterioration decision-making support tool, RESTORE2.
  • We conducted an innovation adoption review of a digital platform for Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust.
  • We continued a two-year evaluation of community-based alternatives to mental health crisis in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight (HIOW Alternatives to Crisis Programme), including a rapid insight event with staff.
  • We collaborated with Health Innovation Manchester to deliver an evaluation of the e-Referral Service Advice & Guidance toolkit, as part of the Innovation Collaborative.
  • We highlighted our work through our Innovation Insight Library and conference abstracts.
  • We supported the wider development of evaluation and implementation capability through co-designing evaluations and evaluation workshops. This included workshops for the Wessex Health Innovation Programme, the University of Southampton Public Health Master’s and ARC South London’s Implementation Science Masterclass.
  • We disseminated our work widely, including publication in academic journals such as British Medical Journal Open Quality and Frontiers in Health Services, and sharing tools to evaluate virtual wards with NHS England.
