It’s time to learn more about whole genome sequencing
Genomic testing is increasingly being used as part of routine NHS patient care and treatment, and tests such as whole genome sequencing will be more widely available through the new national Genomic Medicine Service (GMS). But what is whole genome sequencing? How does it work and how can it benefit people with cancer, rare or infectious disease, and a range of other conditions? The Genomic Education Programme’s free, flexible online course, ‘Whole Genome Sequencing: Decoding the Language of Life and Health’, runs again in February 2020 over a three-week period. The content reflects the most current uses of whole genome sequencing in healthcare and includes information about how it will be used in the GMS; including interviews with leading experts such as Professor Dame Sue Hill, England’s chief scientific officer, and those in the fields of oncology, rare and infectious disease.

Genomics Specialist Careers: meet the genomics workforce
As genomics becomes embedded into routine patient care, people want to know more about the specialists at the helm of this revolution in medicine; and there is a requirement for more people to work in this exciting area. HEE’s Genomics Education Programme has created a series of resources, Genomics Specialist Careers, to shine a light on the often-forgotten specialist roles within the genomics multidisciplinary team.
Featuring the four specialist groups that make up the ‘genomics team’ - clinical bioinformaticians, genetic counsellors, genomic scientists and clinical geneticists, the resource showcases the specialist skills and knowledge required to deliver genomic medicine, and how these professionals work together for patient benefit. The series has been developed both for healthcare professionals who want to learn more about the genomics team and those considering a career in genomics in the future. It forms part of a substantial education programme to inform healthcare professionals about the impact of genomics on clinical practice.
